Earring Trends for 2013 – Eight Hot Tips

Where is earring fashion going in 2013? Which classics simply belong in every earring collection? What’s “in”? Which earrings will be “out” in 2013? What are the earring trends? Don’t miss our eight best earring tips to make it through the year in style. You’ll find matching celeb pictures on the “Celebrities with Earrings/Ear Piercings” pinboard on our Pinterest page.

Trend 1: Everyday champions – classic stud earrings made from top-quality materials

Studs are certainly the most popular earrings for everyday wear. At school, in college, in the office, on the go, and even at the gym, they are not only practical, but also beautiful. Just as last year, a continuation of the trend can be expected that combinations of top-quality materials will prevail, such as 14 or 18 karat gold with pearls or with diamonds. Shapes and sizes may vary.

Who’s wearing them?
At the top of my personal fashion statement list for 2012 is American swimmer and four-time Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin, who swam wearing her pearl studs at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, breaking world records while looking super stylish.
The studs worn by reality TV star Kim Kardashian in April 2012 were probably the earrings which received the most attention last year. Sporting her new gold and diamond studs, the initials K and W, in her left ear, she indicated that she now considered the friendship with Kanye West a serious relationship.
Country singer Taylor Swift (current girlfriend of One Direction singer Harry Styles) wears big flower-shaped stud earrings with diamonds, big round yellow gold studs or studs with pearls and yellow gold.
Actresses Zooey Deschanel and Keira Knightley were also seen wearing studs—Zooey Deschanel appeared at the Emmy Awards in diamond studs, and Keira Knightley looked gorgeous in her sparkling star-shaped stud earrings at various movie premieres.
Justin Bieber had his ears pierced when he was nine years old. He doesn’t wear earrings all the time, but when he does, he prefers diamond or black studs in both ears.

Trend 2: Multiple ear piercings

Wearing more than one earring per ear is not unusual nowadays. In fact, it’s gaining in popularity. Combinations of two or three lobe piercings and one or more piercings in the cartilage area of the upper ear are most common. Often the size of the studs decreases the higher they are set on the earlobe.

Who’s wearing them?
Katy Perry, Pink, Sienna Miller, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Hilary Duff, Jennifer Aniston, and Kate Moss have multiple ear piercings.

Trend 3: Hoops for eternity

Hoops are classic earrings that never go out of style. Your choices range from small to large, from plain white gold, yellow gold or silver to diamond-studded pieces. They can be ideally complemented with bangles or bracelets and look great on the red carpet as well as with more grungy outfits.

Who’s wearing them?
Hoops are the hallmark of Jennifer Lopez, although JLo doesn’t always wear hoop earrings, of course. Hoops are also part of Rihanna‘s and Beyoncé‘s jewelry collections.

Trend 4: Chandeliers or drop-shaped earrings

Chandeliers or drop-shaped earrings are ideal for the perfect romantic look. They appear very feminine and look fabulous with pretty updos. Larger versions of these types are favored for parties and other occasions and worn as statement earrings. In 2013, we’ll see both types often in white gold or yellow gold with precious crystals, precious or semiprecious stones, or diamonds.

Who’s wearing them?
Country singer Carrie Underwood has been spotted in filigree gold chandeliers. Actress Glenn Close wears diamond chandeliers.

Trend 5: Colors – from soft to cool

The color range of earrings in 2013 is marked by two major contrasts. This spring/summer 2013, stones or crystals will either sparkle in warm colors (e.g. red or pink) and soft pastels, or they will radiate cool elegance through black and white contrasts and materials such as onyx and hematite.

Another color trend, which emerged last year, is definitely catching on in jewelry and fashion this year—neon colors. Yes, neon is back!

Now you know what’s “in” in 2013. It’s just as important to know what’s “out”. The following three trends point to earrings which have lost their luster for 2013.

Trend 6: Extremely large hoops are “out”

Although hoops will never be out of style, the time for mega large hoops is over. Fashionistas, socialites, and other jewelry lovers have realized that hoops which reach to your shoulders are quite cumbersome. Also hoops adorned with large acrylic, glass or wooden beads were a short-lived fad, which will be phased out in 2013.

Trend 7: Bye-bye, feather earrings

Farewell to feather earrings in 2013. Although feather shapes can still be found in filigree creations made from karat gold, earrings with real or fake bird feathers are a thing of the past.

Trend 8: Men with just one earring are a dying breed

For men, earrings in just one ear are no longer a trend. Studs in both earlobes are far more popular nowadays.
